Random

Holds a random value between Min and Max and jumps to a new one on every whole number of Position, or every time Trigger fires. The sequence is set by Seed and Steps, so the same Position always gives the same value and a show plays back the same way every time.

Inputs

PortTypeDefaultRangeDescription
PositionScalar0.0anyPicks the value. Each whole number is a new step, and the sequence repeats every Steps positions
MinScalar0.0−1–1Low end of the output range
MaxScalar1.0−1–1High end of the output range. Set it below Min to invert the range
SmoothScalar0.00–10 jumps at each step, 1 glides across the whole step, and values in between finish the glide early and hold
SeedScalar0.00–99999Different seeds produce different random sequences
TriggerScalar0.00–1Each rise through 0.5 steps to the next value, on top of Position

Outputs

PortTypeDescription
OutScalarCurrent random value, between Min and Max

Controls

  • Steps: Length of the sequence before it repeats, from 1 to 64 values. Defaults to 8.
  • Sync lasers: On by default, so all lasers get the same value. Turn it off and each laser gets its own.

Ideas

  • Wire BPM's Beat Position into Position for a new value on every beat. Multiply Beat Position by 0.25 first for one value per bar, or by 2 for two per beat.
  • Feed into a Color node's hue for a different color on each beat.
  • Raise Smooth to glide between values instead of jumping. At 0.5 it glides for the first half of each step and holds for the rest.
  • Leave Position unwired and fire Trigger from a MIDI pad or an audio hit to jump to a new value on each hit.
  • Turn off Sync lasers so each projector in an output group lands on its own value.

Tips

  • With Beat Position wired in and Steps at 8, the pattern repeats every 8 beats. Raise Steps for a longer pattern that's harder to spot.
  • Smooth only glides as Position moves. Trigger hits always jump straight to the next value.
  • Trigger fires the same way as Envelope's Hit. A MIDI note arrives as its velocity scaled to 0–1, so notes softer than half velocity need scaling up to fire.
  • Noise: smooth, continuous randomness instead of stepped values
  • BPM: Beat Position as a beat-synced Position source
  • Counter: steps through values in order instead of at random
  • Sequencer: a pattern you draw instead of random values
