Counter

Adds Step to a running count on every beat, or each time Trigger fires. Min, Max, and Limit decide what happens at the ends: keep going, hold, loop back, or turn around.

Inputs

PortTypeDefaultRangeDescription
TriggerScalar0.00–1With Count On set to Trigger, each rise through 0.5 counts one Step
ResetScalar0.00–1While at or above 0.5, holds the count at Min, or at Max when Step is negative. Counting resumes once it falls
StepScalar1.0anyAdded on each count. Make it negative to count down
MinScalar0.0anyLowest count. The count starts here, or at Max when Step is negative
MaxScalar7.0anyHighest count

Outputs

Controls

  • Count On: Beat (the default) counts once on every beat of the global BPM clock. Trigger counts each time Trigger rises through 0.5, whether it's wired or set by MIDI, OSC, or a macro.
  • Limit: what happens at Min and Max. Defaults to Loop.
    • Off: keeps counting past them.
    • Clamp: holds at Min or Max.
    • Loop: jumps back to the other end.
    • Zigzag: turns around and counts the other way.

Ideas

  • Wire Count into a Polygon's Sides with Min 3 and Max 8 for a shape that gains a side on every beat.
  • Feed a Duplicator's Amount with Min 1 and Limit on Clamp so copies build up beat by beat, then pulse Reset from a MIDI pad to start over.
  • Set Step to 0.25, Min to 0, and Max to 0.75 for four evenly spaced values, for example quarter turns into From Polar's Phase.
  • Switch Limit to Zigzag for a value that climbs, then steps back down.
  • Set Count On to Trigger and fire it from a MIDI pad to advance one step per hit.

Tips

  • The count starts at Min (Max when Step is negative). It starts over when the clip is triggered again, for example by a new cue, or when the timeline jumps back.
  • Reset holds rather than fires once. A short pulse starts the count over; keep it high to park the count at its start, and counting picks up on the first beat or Trigger after it drops.
  • A MIDI note arrives as its velocity scaled to 0–1, so notes softer than half velocity need scaling up to count.
  • Map Range: same Limit modes, and remaps the count to any range
  • BPM: the beat clock behind Count On Beat
  • Random: a random value per beat instead of a count
  • Phasor: with Wrap off, a smooth count that keeps rising
