Spectrum Bars

Draws a row of bars whose heights follow the Level input. Wire in an Audio Input in Spectrum mode and it becomes a spectrum analyzer.

Inputs

PortTypeDefaultRangeDescription
LevelScalar0.50–1Bar height, read once per bar from left to right. A per-point signal gives each bar its own height
BarsScalar123–64Number of bars
Scale XScalar0.50–1Horizontal size
Scale YScalar0.50–1Vertical size
Notch DepthScalar3%0–50%How far the line dips between bars, so bars of equal height still read as separate
Notch WidthScalar30%0–90%Width of each dip, as a share of one bar's slot
MirrorSwitchoff—Bars grow both up and down from the baseline
CircularSwitchoff—Wraps the bars around a ring
Inner RadiusScalar0.350.2–0.95In Circular mode, the radius the bars grow from, as a fraction of the outer radius

Outputs

PortTypeDescription
FrameFrameOne continuous path across the bar tops

Controls

Resolution: Low, Medium, High, or Very High. Sets how many points are sampled along the path.

Ideas

  • Wire an Audio Input in Spectrum mode into Level. Its Freq Low to Freq High range is spread across the bars, lowest on the left, so set the range to the part of the mix you want to show.
  • Turn on Circular for a round analyzer.
  • Wire an Oscillator into Level for a wave that rolls across the bars when no audio is playing.

Tips

  • Many tall, uneven bars make a long path for the galvos to scan. If the output flickers, lower Bars or Scale Y.
  • Audio Input: spectrum, loudness, or waveform data to drive the bars
  • Wave: a smooth wave instead of bars
  • Colorize: color the bars
